Late Summer of 2009
In 2009 I did not start as a co-pilot at DAKAR 2009, but was part of a service truck crew at Dakar. It was fun. In late summer (northern hemisphere) of 2009 I did a 'getting-to-know-the-desert' consulting workshop for MAN in Marocco. While we did our truck testing, Sven Quandt's X-Raid Team also started testing around the same area. At that time I was not signed with a team and the offers I had on my table had not been too much of an exitement. Sven Quandt asked me whether I could imagine to help Leonid Novitskiy on his way back. A few months earlier Leonid suffered a hefty crash while being in a competition. Here we go - two guys sharing the same love for the same sport and not being really able to communicate properly by voice. But we decided to give it try and picked the Shamrock Rally in fall of 2009. Coming back I took a private crash course learning the Russian language, but only what is needed for a co-pilot (thanks Johannes B.). And it worked out perfectly - we came in second and on the base of that achievement, Leonid and I decided to team up and run as a private X-Raid Russia team. Leonid is a top driver, a reliable and trustful person - inside and outside the car.
